Floods
Flooding at the Sharp Farm is commonplace. Floods renew the fertility of the bottomland and have done so for hundreds of years. Even though the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said this site is not a floodplain, a glance at the photos shows the truth. Residents of Slatyfork, WV often witness periodic floods. The irony is that the streambed is bone-dry during most of the summer, because the normal surface flow has been diverted underground. Floodplains in general are poor locations for sewage plants. A karst floodplain is even worse because it collapses, floods, and concentrates contamination.
